The LT1584/LT1585/LT1587 regulators are ideal for applications such as PentiumTM Processor Supplies, PowerPCTM Supplies, Other 2.5V to 3.6V Microprocessor Supplies, Low Voltage Logic Supplies, Battery-Powered Circuitry, and Post Regulator for Switching Supply.

The LT1584/LT1585/LT1587 regulators have output current capabilities of 7A, 4.6A, and 3A respectively.

The purpose of the decoupling capacitance required for microprocessor applications with load transients of 3.8A is to ensure good transient response performance by handling the higher order frequency components of the load current step until the regulator throttles to the load current level. This decoupling network, consisting of high-quality surface mount tantalum capacitors and ceramic capacitors, should be placed as close as possible to the processor pins to minimize inductive trace runs. Capacitors with low ESR, low ESL, and good high-frequency characteristics are critical in meeting the output voltage tolerances of high-speed microprocessors. The output capacitance can be increased without limit to further improve stability and transient response of the regulators. The LT1584/LT1585/LT1587 family of regulators is specifically designed to meet the fast current load-step requirements of modern microprocessors and save total cost by needing less output capacitance to maintain regulation.
